Vintage Blocks

How we got them

When our Gramma died, my mother gave my sister a stack of quilt blocks from her.  We later discovered there were two groups, one of which were Sunbonnet Sue and Sunbonnet Sam, made from flour sack material, appliqued on muslin and embroidered by her.

What we did with them

When our cousin came for a visit, we decided to donate 12 of the blocks to a charity she is involved with in the area where Gramma used to live.  Every year the ladies in the group make a quilt to raffle at their fundraiser.  During her one week visit, we designed a quilt top and put it together for her to take home.

The Challenge

Some of the blocks had a little damage and they had to be squared up, which resulted in some blocks being on point and some not.  We were fortunate to have fabric in our stash that was a perfect compliment to the blocks.

Quilting

Because of the historical nature of the blocks, we did not want to machine quilt the finished top.  The ladies in our cousin's group lovingly quilted it by hand, creating a stunning finished product.

The End

The quilt was displayed at their annual get-together, and a significant sum was raised from the sale of tickets, many of which were purchased by our other cousins and extended family.  The winner, while not family, was delighted with the finished product.
